Greetings from our 2010/2011 president
Phyllis Charlton
Welcome
A short history of our club by Anne Pennycook.
Our Probus club was the first in New Zealand to be formed in the new Millennium, hence the inclusion of 2000 in our name. Approxima-tely 70 people attended our first meeting in March 2000, which was chaired by our Inaugural President Doug Lilly. Within a year our club grew from 70 to 120 members. Our venue, the local Bowling Club, is central to four surrounding suburbs and serves our purpose extremely well in aspects of locality, size, convenience & affordability. We are now into our 9th year. Membership has reached 125 with the waiting list continuing to grow. Being a club of mixed membership we are making a determined effort to ensure balance between male and female with neither exceeding 60% of the membership. Our committee does an excellent job in maintaining interest, with our program of Speakers, Outings and Activities enabling our members to enjoy a most congenial atmosphere.Visitors to our Probus club would be most warmly welcomed.
(Anne was our 2008-2009 President).
What is Probus
A Probus club is a local association of retired or semi retired professional and business people – and others who have had some measure of responsibility in any field of worthy endeavour – who are of good character and respected in their communities.
The name Probus is an amalgam of the words PROfession and BUSness. Probus is also a Latin word meaning honest and virtuous, from which the English word “probity” is derived.
Clubs meet monthly for fellowship, morning tea, a short business session and to hear an interesting guest speaker. They also arrange on a regular basis, visits to interesting places usually with a lunch stop as well as possibly picnics or barbecues in the summer months.
A Probus club is run by its members and must be non-political and non-sectarian. Officers are elected annually. The President holds office for one year and is normally replaced the following year by the current Vice President. The club operates within the standard Probus Club Constitution (and by-laws) adopted by the members and is accredited by the Probus Centre – South Pacific.
Probus clubs are not service clubs and don’t raise funds or make a profit. They charge moderate membership fees sufficient to cover operating expenses.
