Scottish Country Dancing is a sociable, non-competitive type of dancing.
This is a type of “folk” dancing and while some dances can be energetic, they are not as vigorous as Highland dancing so are suitable for people of all ages.
We welcome everybody from 11 years to 101, (there is a special class for children from 7 years), and you do not need to be Scottish to participate: over the years we have had dancers from many different ethnic groups. There are dancers all around the world including Canada, Japan and of course Scotland. Wherever you are you can take your dancing shoes and join the worldwide family of Scottish Country Dancers.
During the evening you will dance with many partners, so bring a friend or come by yourself, as everybody is included in every dance.
There are two different dance steps, one for reels and jigs, and the other which is the uniquely Scottish strathspey step. Most of the dances are danced in sets of four couples in two lines with each couple facing their partners, but sometimes as a square set. No special clothes are needed although flat shoes are required. Scottish Country Dancing is a good way to exercise both the body and the mind while having fun.
