Club history Minimize

A short history of our club by Anne Pennycook.

Our Probus club was the first in New Zealand to be formed in the new Millennium, hence the inclusion of 2000 in our name. Approxima-tely 70 people attended our first meeting in March 2000, which was chaired by our Inaugural President Doug Lilly. Within a year our club grew from 70 to 120 members. Our venue, the local Bowling Club, is central to four surrounding suburbs and serves our purpose extremely well in aspects of locality, size, convenience & affordability. We are now into our 9th year. Membership has reached 125 with the waiting list continuing to grow. Being a club of mixed membership we are making a determined effort to ensure balance between male and female with neither exceeding 60% of the membership. Our committee does an excellent job in maintaining interest, with our program of Speakers, Outings and Activities enabling our members to enjoy a most congenial atmosphere.Visitors to our Probus club would be most warmly welcomed.

Proud to live in Waitakere, West Auckland

Waitakere separated from the rest of Greater Auckland by a causeway over a narrow isthmus to Auckland City and the upper harbour bridge, which runs to the North Shore, has always stood out as a uniquely distinctive region in its own right. West Harbour, Hobsonville, Whenuapai and Massey, where most West Harbour 2000 Probians live, have a long history, dating back to the earliest settlement of Auckland. Farming, viticulture and pottery formed an original basis for life in the late 1800’s.

Development was initially slow; allowing the establishment of the typical “ways of the West”, but during recent decades there has been extensive and spectacular growth both in population numbers and ethnic diversity.

As part of an eco city, the area prides itself in being clean and green in all aspects of life. Sitting between the Waitakere Ranges and the Waitemata Harbour the benefits of widely ranging activities are at our doorstep. All forms of leisure pursuits, the arts and other delights abound. There is involvement, loyalty, energy and direction in the life of the community. Aucklanders and other visitors head to Waitakere for their weekend recreation, to enjoy bush walking, picnicking, scenic driving, fishing and boating. Others come to enjoy the benefits of the wine trail; West Auckland wines are consistent award winners at home and abroad.

Doug Lilly, inaugural president.
